With just three weeks to go until its launch, the Gin Guild is incredibly disappointed that the government has persisted in burdening our industry and consumers further at a time when both are struggling with rising costs.

The Government is pressing ahead with a revised Alcohol Duty system which as a number of issues and in particular for the gin industry, a substantial hike in the rate of excise. It will have significant ramifications for the UK gin producers who are already struggling with increased costs and declining sales.

Overnight this will add between 81p and £1.16* to a bottle of gin, making Britain amongst the highest payers of alcohol duty on spirits across Europe, which will hit our huge number of small producers hardest.

We remind our members to be prepared for the rise from 1st August. If you have any queries please get in touch.

* From 1st August the Alcohol Duty rises on a 40% bottle of gin from £8.04 to £8.85, and for a Navy Strength (57% ABV) bottle of gin from £11.47 to £12.63 per bottle.
